Hi Hugo,
some assumptions:
your description shows, that probably the driver is o.k. If there can be caused an arc on the anode of the Line-output-Valve but not on the high-voltage-winding, perhaps there is a short in it. It is common, that this winding can be shortened after operating an old set for a while after storage for years. In some cases the insulating-material is degenerated and causes too much load on the winding, the winding itself can be o.k. There can be a short in the HV-Rectifier-Valve, too, to prove this you can remove the Valve or open the Anode-contact, if now HV is seen, then probably there's a short in the HV-Rectifier-Tube.
If its possible to take apart the Line-output-transformer, you can remove the HV-Winding and operate the transformer without the winding, if the Line-output-stage works o.k. now without red-plating, you have the prove, that the HV-Winding ist the cause of the fault. The core of the transformer must be re-assembled correctly with the proper air-gap-plates.
greetings, Ingo
Hi again ingo
I already tried that, i removed the top cap of the HV rectifier valve and it makes no difference and then i removed the valve completely...still very little voltage on the cap, only a tiny bit or spark
for peace of mind i even replaced the wire for the heaters with red high voltage wire salvaged from the anode cup of a modern crt tv..
its the same...almost no spark.
i will do as you say , tidy up my work table and prepare for dismantling the transformer. If i understand correctly what you said, it is not sufficient to disconnect the HV winding (whithe tyre), i must remove it physically because shorted turns inside can cause trouble..
one thing i should mention:
before the tv went dead it displayed a weird symptom for some days:
i would power it up and the picture would be very blurry and unwatchable like if there is no focus...putting the high voltage probe on the focus wire revealed about 4kv there. (homemade probe, may not be accurate)
as the set would warm up the picture would gain focus
focus voltage remained the same, around 4kv for good focus
turning the focus potentiomenter afected the voltage as expected
i inspected the crt socket and found no green corrosion
the crt tests very strong on the Muter BMR crt tester
maybe it was moisture boiling inside the HV winding? there was no sparks no sizzling or noises while the set operated and it was very stable after that initial warm up period
greetings , Hugo
