Saba Breisgau 12

Beitrag von John-Jarratt »

I have a question about this radio but it probably applies to most multi-band radios in general. The schematic diagram for the Breisgau 12 gives the B+ voltage but does not specify whether it is measured while on the Am band, Fm band or the FM band with the stereo decoder turned on. There is a significant drop when the stereo decoder is turned on while in FM mode. The voltage is highest in AM mode. It is reduced a bit more for just FM and drops much more when the decoder is turned on. Which is the best mode be on to set B+ when replacing the Bridge rectifier? Thanks for any comment.

No reply yet so here is what I did. The schematic does not indicate which band should be on for the indicated B+ voltage. So, I assumed that the voltage given is the maximum that should appear in the radio. The AM mode gives the lowest voltage so ,when I replaced the selenium rectifier, I chose a 10 watt resistor that gave the right B+ voltage.

I wonder what decorder you mean. The Breisgau 12 was designed one year before stereo broadcasting war introduced. Therefore it was not equipped with a stereo decoder at the factory. Has the decoder been retrofitted?

Depending on what decoder it is, its power consumption may cause a drop in the operating voltage which was not planned by the developers. So I would measure the voltage when the decoder is inactive. A decoder with high power consuption could also overload the power transformer and the rectifier.

Some people try by all means to get exactly the nominal voltage. That is unnecessary, a deviation of a few percent does not matter.

Thank you Lutz. The Breisgau Automatic 12 was made in 1962. I have the optional stereo decoder.

Hello everybody,

the Freiburg 12 was the first radio were a stereodecoder could be retrofitted. It was the "Multiplex-Adapter 12", which still worked with tubes (ECC82 and ECF80). It was mounted hanging on the top of the housing.
The decoder 12 is very, very rare. I've only seen one of those in my career ...

Kind regards,

Joerg
